I don't think this is correct

I am not about to disagree with you - TPMS is not required where I live and not very common - my experience is limited to one single vehicle that one of my daughters owned.  We never changed tires (or sensors) during her ownership and whenever the TPMS light came on, the problem was resolved by adjusting the tire pressures.

Having made that clear, if you trawl the internet, forums, social media, reddit, you'll find many people whose experience with TPMS does not match yours & mine.

We appear to be in a minority - is it just luck, are we doing something that few people do, or, are the masses out there just ...

I have 2 sets of factory sensors and 1 set of after market once though they are 3 cheap Chinese and 1 random programmable and they all talk quite happily with my 2018 gen3. I haven't tried the standard gen4 ones as I have no motivation to bigger tyres on my gen3 and vice versa. That said I do have a niggling recollection of the new ones being on a different protocol like the early ones are seimens and the latter ones are denso or something. But that's not guaranteed to relate to jimny it might have something to do with the toyota i can't remember the context of hearing it.

I bought a set of sensors and had them fitted by Mr Tyre. That was back on 17th Feb. '22. I cant remember where i got them from but they were not "genuine" Suzuki. The wheels are shod with BFG A/T and are my winter combination. They adjusted to the car without any problems.
I have my own compressor so varying the pressure is quick and easy and I stick to Suzuki recommendation of 26 psi all round. During the recent cold spell the sensor on tyre o/f fired up and advised me that pressure was 22 psi with the other 3 at 23 psi. I reset all the tyres and the warning light went out. When it stops raining, I must remember to reset the pressures .

A lot of responses but not quite to your questions in some cases.

Question 1: will the 2016 recognize the 2023 sensors?

Answer: It is not clear from looking at the parts lists.  The part number seem to indicate a 2014-18 Gen3 sensor and a different 2019+ Gen4 sensor.

But, that said, I know that the Gen4 sensor was used on other Suzuki models before 2019, under various part numbers.  So it is possible that the late Gen3 sensor is the same (functionally) just with a different part number for the Gen4 book.

If it were me, I would fit the wheels and give it a go before I bought new sensors.  Which brings us to the other question...

Question 2: if the Gen4 sensors do work with a Gen3, will the Jimny automatically recognize the new sensors, or will you have to do something special?

Answer: Usually the Jimny will pick up the new sensors automatically.  Sometimes this may involve a short drive, as @Gatisk said.  For my Gen4 it has always been automatic and instant, and I swap wheels seasonally.

Hope this helps.

Additional info: TPMS sensors have two characteristics, frequency and "protocol."  (The protocol can be thought of as the language.)  There are two frequencies used in ~99% of all sensors, and fewer than 10 common protocols.  When someone buys aftermarket TPMS sensors and has them programmed, they are programming these two characteristics.  Standard Suzuki factory TPMS sensors, from Continental VDO, are not programmable-- they are permanently set to the correct frequency and protocol, just install and go.  The car itself does not require "programming" -- it looks for 4 sensors (with particular frequency and protocol) and when it finds them that's enough.

I am just about to get new wheels (or reuse the Gen 3 alloys I have) and tyres for my SZ5, I wasn’t going to bother with TPMS as they will only be used for off-road.

I was going to put up with the flashing warning, but can anyone recommend TPMS sensors which don’t cost the earth and are suitable?

The alternative is a ‘delete box’ but they might cost as much.
