Front Diff - Locked on not?

I have a new Gen 4 JB74 (1500) and have noticed that when in 4-wheel drive mode the front crabs terribly when turning in a tight circle etc (parking). It feels as though the front axles differential is locked all the time when in 4-wheel drive mode? To be honest it's feels bloody awful.... other 4WD cars I've owned have been as smooth as silk.

If the drive to the front wheels is locked all the time when 4WD is selected then that's really going to make a mess of the differential if driving on solid ground.

Can someone kindly explain what's going on?

Many thanks in advance, Will.

That sounds as if you are in 4WD on "solid ground", which you should not be - the Jimny is a "part time 4WD", and the circumstances you're describing will cause drive train windup and possibly damage to the vehicle.

There should have been a card supplied with the vehicle instructing you under what circumstances 4WD can be used.

You should only be using 4WD on loose or slippery surfaces. It shouldn't be used on grippy road surfaces as there is no centre diff, there is a real chance you will cause damage to the transmission system. "Transmission Windup", this can cause problems when trying to get back in to 2WD also.

You shouldn't even engage it on wet rainy tarmac surfaces.
