I changed the oil on the gen3 this morning.  I put the old filter on by hand in August (she does short trips in it, so 6-monthly changes) and it came off by hand, as it should.  It's only usually when a garage has put the filter on that you get problems.  I assume they use a tool for tightening, which is not what any handbook will tell you to do.

It is my favourite car to do an oil change - such easy access.  The only downside is that you always spill oil down the engine block when removing the old filter.  I stuff rags underneath beforehand but some always gets past.

Normally I would agree that tightening the filter by use of a tool is unnecessary, but the official Toyota repair manual for the 1KZ-T engine says.
"Tighten the filter by hand until the rubber gasket contacts the seat of the filter housing and then using SST ( as mentioned by Lambert earlier) give it an additional 3/4 turn to seat the filter"
Yes, it's ambiguous. I find that hand pressure has always worked for me and so it will remain.

I've just had a look at the Suzuki manual and that says:-

Either tighten filter to 10.5 lbs-ft
or
Tighten by hand and then add 3/4 turn by wrench.

That's probably a mistranslation.  All spin-on oil filters work the sane way, and it's 3/4 turn from when the O-ring makes contact, not 3/4 turn after hand tight.

Yes, missed out "until O ring makes contact with seat and then add 3/4 turn."
