Front Brakes

Although my Gen 3 sailed through it's MOT last week the garage mentioned that the front discs have slight scoring on them and they will need to be changed before the next MOT.  Since we are going in to Winter I might as well do them now and I am not fitting new discs without new pads.

After reading on here that EBC Greenstuff pads are the ones to go for I am now wondering what I should use for the discs?  I always used Brembo or Pagid on my other car, but all discs seem to wear quickly these days so is it worth paying extra for the disc?

Anyone got a recommendation?  My discs are the standard type with the 108.3mm centre hole.

How bad are we talking? Slight scoring is not a reason for MOT failure. It's not really an issue at all. If the disc is above the minimum wear thickness then I wouldn't rush to change them.

From the MOT inspection manual:
1.1.14. Brake discs and drums

A brake disc or drum must be significantly worn before you should reject it. Being worn below the manufacturer’s recommended limits is not a reason in itself.

Defect
(a) Brake disc or drum:
(i) significantly and obviously worn
(ii) insecure, fractured or otherwise likely to fail. Major, Dangerous

(b) Contaminated with oil, grease etc. Major
(c) Missing. Dangerous
(d) Brake drum back plate insecure. Major

I got the EBC green stuff pads and the EBC disc , on my 3 jimnys very good

I haven't seen the discs, but the local garage (who I have delt with for many years and trust) said there was scoring which would need to be fixed before the next MOT. I assume that means they don't think they will pass next October, so no real rush.

I had thought about Greenstuff pads for a while and since the braking force is not quite as good as it was a year or so ago it's time for new pads. For the cost of a pair of discs I might as well change them at the same time.

Ebc disc and pad combo here too. You will wonder how you ever managed to avoid hitting anything once you change.

I think I am going to go EBC discs and Greenstuff pads, it's a few hours to swap them over and I don't want to fit something that then needs doing again fairly soon.

I have seen the kit for about £90, not too bad. I am not going to do it this weekend it looks fairly wet up here.

I fitted Greenstuff pads and EBC slotted and spotted discs to an MX-5 years ago and they were ok, but the slotted discs do make a chopping sound as you drive past walls or houses.

Greenstuff pads, whether on cars, motorbikes or bicycles, acquired a bit of a bad reputation for the friction material separating from the backplate.  I don't know to what extent this problem was truly fixed.

Personally, I'd use standard Pagid or Mintex stuff on a Jimny.

EBC green pads and disks here also, well worth the extra money in my opinion. I could feel the extra "bite" and Lambert has seen confirmation on the brake tester. I had Pagid prior to these and they scored up and started to pulse way before they had worn down. The EBC disks are visibly less scored when used in conjunction with EBC pads.
​​​​​​Been on for several thousand now and not scoring up (or falling apart). Also considerably less brake dust on the wheels. I've only ever fitted EBC to my motorcycles and they get pushed a lot harder than the Jimny, wouldn't fit anything else.
 

Just my luck the 108mm diameter EBC brake discs are out of stock in the main places. I will have to either hunt around or wait.

The kit I need is PD01KF1410, seems it is out of stock at most places until next week.

One or two retailers are saying they have it, but they don't say it is available next day which I take to mean they will take the order and then not ship. I am going to wait until it is in stock somewhere, then buy it.
