 That it's quieter in 4x4 than 4x2 to me suggests it might actually be coming from the transfer box not the axle as a noisy axle would be constantly making noise regardless of anything else as it is always powered. 

The same consideration might be applicable to the transfer case - the rear drive is always powered - in fact, if anything it should be noisier in 4WD than in 2WD.

My train of thought was that in 4WD the load on the hypoid gears in the rear axle would be reduced by 50% as it would be handling half the torque load.
