Welcome to the forum. Define terrible noise? Grinding, whining, clunking, heavy, soft, relationship to road speed, any specific gear, relationship to road surface, cornering or straight etc etc?

First - if you are driving it in 4WD on a hard surface, please don't do it, you can get away with it if you're travelling in a straight line for short distances, but you run the risk of "drive train wind up" and damage.

If you haven't already done it, I suggest you start by checking the lube level in the rear axle, followed by a drain & refill - examine the fluid that comes out and the drain plug magnet - any silver in the oil, metal chunks, excessive swarf on the magnet, are all signs of trouble.

It may just be a case of inadequate lube, but it could also be more.

Noise in cars travels. That it's quieter in 4x4 than 4x2 to me suggests it might actually be coming from the transfer box not the axle as a noisy axle would be constantly making noise regardless of anything else as it is always powered. So to that end I would add a transfer box oil change and inspection to the above comment. The state of the oils will give you a good clue where you need to look further.
