hi everyone, i m new on this forum, so please I beg your pardon if I might do some mistakes.
i recently boght a suzuki jimny 2013 1.3l  m13engine
i discovered at once that when the engine is cold it takes a few sec more to fire up. Today (temperature 6 celsius) the engine didn't fire up at once but on the second try.
what could be the cause of this?

tx in advance

Bad battery perhaps? Maybe if it's not too great anyway and then with the cold weather it could be causing your problem

Do you know how old the battery is - don't be too quick to dismiss the idea - especially if you're in a colder climate - the additional load cranking a cold engine over with a cold battery can allow the battery voltage to drop just enough that it doesn't fire.

On the second attempt the current through the battery from the first attempt warms it enough. that it delivers more power.

At least look at the battery voltage whilst cranking to see how far it drops, anything lower than around 9~10V and you just might have found the problem.

When you say doesn't fire for a few seconds what are you talking about 5, 15, 30 seconds of churning or what? They don't just spring off the first touch of the key especially when cold, not like a Toyota that you almost only need to think about turning the key to be running.

I know they can differ, but my experience is they will start well within 2-3 second  first turn. I would start by checking the plugs / service state, I know its new to you, but the previous owner (or garage) may have just ignored this. Also get the battery checked, Halfords will check it for free if you ask, so no need to book into a garage.

all the best

First cold snap the AA & RAC are rushed off their feet going to cars that won't start, it is nearly always battery.

When it's cold,
- the engine takes more starting (has to be turned over for longer),
- the oil is thicker,
- the starter motor current is higher,
- the battery's output is typically lower, especially peak current.

Even a good battery can struggle to start a cold engine if it is less than 20% charged and if it is more than 3 years old, that is probably your problem. The battery should be date coded, worth a check.

Also depress the clutch when starting it removes a little load.
