Changing the filter is a pretty easy job. Drain the oil and drop the sump (it's just held on with a ring of bolts). The filter is held in with one bolt. While you are in there it's a good opportunity to check the magnet on the sump for metal shavings.

You will need a filter, sump gasket and filter o-ring. For some reason most filter kits don't include that o-ring.

If your oil is nasty you can drain/refill the box, run it for a few minutes then repeat a couple of times. This flushes most of the old oil out of the torque converter. It's a bit tedious and wastes a lot of oil but it does the job.

Agree fully with Lambert, our 2006 Jimny hasn’t been anywhere near a main dealership since 2008. At least you know the job is done properly if you can do it yourself, and save a fortune too.
