Changing the atf was created by Lambert
Just done the 18k service on Temeraire and all is good again. However the work I am doing with her is making me question the Suzuki service schedule of 99k for the transmission fluid. The extreme service schedule is a bit ott stating something like 50k km or 24 months. It also states dealer only so I contacted one of the local dealer departments for a price and they said that towing would not affect the main 99k schedule which I'm not convinced about. They also said that the transmission doesn't have a filter which I find very odd. If that's the case though it suggests that the atf change is actually just a case of drain and replace which is not something I want to pay a dealer to do. Do we have someone who has done an atf change that can shed some knowledge.

I didn't do the change myself. I let the dealer do it. The item at the bottom of the picture is the "filter". Part number is 26570-76J10. Suzuki refers to it as a strainer. It's accessible if you drain and drop the pan. Draining the pan removes (if memory serves) a little over half of the fluid.
Like you, I would lean toward more frequent changes than your dealer is recommending.
I started out with nothing & still have most of it left

A Russian website about the Jimny (don't ask how I can read it...) recommends atf change every 60k km (38k miles). But, the website also mentions the fact that a Jimny in Russia has more to suffer than in other countries.
Aside: both a Dutch and the prementioned Russian website mention a g/box oil change every 45k kms (27k miles) for manual transmissions for Gen3 cars.

Ooh look a parts diagram that shows a device that cleans the oil in a automatic gearbox. And people are surprised when I let my anti main dealer bias show!
Cheers for your information both.

Just be aware that the ATF fluid drained from the drain plug is 1.4 litres but the system holds 3.7 litres therefore a "change" is not a change unless you have stripped the gearbox down and got the fliud everywhere on the garage floor. Sounds like the only way to "change" the fliud is to drain it regularly from the drain plug and top up gradually freshening it up.

Ok I did wonder if that might be the case. I guess I'll monitor it at service and see if it deteriorates over time and "change" it if it becomes too discoloured. Cheers.
