When I first started daily usage of Dreadnaught she had been subject to 18k of very steady usage by my parents which included Asda's petrol. She wouldn't rev cleanly beyond 3500 and was very sluggish. It took 6 months of shells finest and regular Italian tune ups to get back to the full 6k. Modern oils may be good but supermarket fuel is filthy. After all why are terraclean in business if there no market.

If Asda's fuel is so bad, why continue to use it? I use Morrisons fuel in both the Q3 and Tonka and before Tonka in the LC. Never had a problem and the Q3, after 27,000 miles runs as cleanly as when new. I live in a large town and within 3 miles of a motorway but even on that there is rarely any chance of high speed work or serious acceleration, but when I do need it, it is there.

There are many companies who sell their products on the basis that your car, van or truck will die an early death if you ignore their technology and advise and there will always be people who believe the hype and splash out large sums of cash in the belief that the hype is true.

I'm not one of them and strangely my motors soldier on with impunity.

When I had the head gasket replaced apparently the bores were virtually as new so evidently a diet of shell and esso petrol accompanied with plenty of revs didn't do any harm for the 90k odd I did.

I am with Lightning on this, 3,500 rpm is all that I need for daily driving and my engine pulls cleanly and vibration free from 1,400 in fifth. Viv's Q3 will better that slightly, let's say 1,300 and as we live in a large town with plenty of traffic, screwing the engine is pointless and gets you noticed and all for the wrong reasons.
Being proud of your ability to use high revs is nothing special, that's best kept for the track. The rest of use drive sensibly.
By the way, if your style of driving didn't do any harm, why the gasket change?
