£36,000 for a 2 year old car that was probably only £20k new, he must be deluded if he thinks he can get that.

The best way to stop this madness is that no one pays over the odds, then we will see prices fall.

I'm starting to see the prices of MK3s creeping up too. I'd a dealer offer £6000 part ex whereas only a year ago a Suzuki dealer offered £4500 on my 61 Plate 98k mile clean Jimny

There's also the usual mad prices on Auto trader but it's certainly appreciated or held its value quite well.

One problem is, prices of Defenders are also on a roll at the moment.
For a nice TD5 (1998-2006) you need to put down at least £15,000.
Anything with an MOT is worth £5,000
And while the Jimny is smaller, it's an alternative to a Defender that you can still get for under £5,000 in good condition.

The whole second hand market is up at the moment (although Jimnys and classic Defenders are outstripping that rise by some margin).

Will be interesting to see if classic Defender prices remain strong once the Ineos Grenadier is released. Some of the blinged up Defs are being listed at c.£50k, while you'll be able to buy a brand new Grenadier for £45k ish.

Everyone thinks they want a Defender 90 but in reality they are a pretty basic vehicle to drive and a real culture shock after any modern car.

They are slow, leak water, rust quickly, have poor economy, are expensive to insure and the fit/finish is laughable.
They are also noisy, bouncy and generally, on face value, crap.

And l am saying this as a long time Defender enthusiast and owner.
Of course the vehicle is more than the sum of its parts and has a very large and loyal following.

What's happening now is the investment barn owners are pushing prices up because values are "only going one way"
Well, once the diesel ban comes into force in various cities these dirty old diesel vehicles may become less popular.
Prices have already fallen in London, where it now costs more to park a pre euro 6 diesel vehicle and there's also a daily charge for older diesels.

lt will be interesting to see how values change over the next couple of years.

It a fairly accurate description of a Defender and my Series Land Rover, which is less sophisticated being on cart springs.
HOWEVER, as soon as you put it into mud and get off road it all makes sense. It's only in the unnatural urban environment it feels out of place.

It was never intended to be a Chelsea tractor, it was a farmer's work tool.

The Jimny falls foul of the same culture shock for people moving from a modern euro box, hence the negative press.

As to values, the clock is ticking for all fossil fuel vehicles, old diesel is just the tip of an expanding iceberg of legislation to come. Enjoy them while yo can!
