Hi all,
Thanks for the replies thus far and sorry to revive a dead topic, but through the lockdown and having just passed the Masters degree (God knows how) I've been rattling through plans and options etc.
I now propose a more realistic idea, that I cant find any previous attempts or info on.
So; the Suzuki Liana, with the M16a engine, a popular conversion into Jimnys, also came with a diesel option. 1.4DDiS, available on the continent, but beneficial for my wallet its the same as the 1.4HDi. Looking at the bolt pattern on the block, placement of the starter, height etc, it seems that it might be a much more straightforward fit into a Jimny.
The question. Has anyone debated this before? Opinions? (Aside from the obvious, "why bother?")

The Jimny did come with the 1.5 ddis in mainland Europe so it is possible to do. It's just not a particularly good motor from what I have read?

This isn't just a case of not liking the way the Suzuki petrol engine "works" it is also realising that you would be upsetting the way the Jimny behaves on the road. Suzuki try to balance their cars to achieve the magic 50/50 balance front to rear and replacing a lightweight all alloy (I believe) motor with a commercial Kubota all iron (I believe) engine will upset the original balance and produce a motor that has a tendency to understeer.
I drove a Landcruiser KZJ70 so I know how you feel about the totally different feel of a big torquey diesel but it was just a transitory period to acclimatise from one to the other.
As Lambert said, give it a couple of months.

I see there is a k9k Renalt/Nissan 1500cc turbo motor, 65 to 110hp depending on model, would be an interesting project, can't imagine how scary it would be to fit it and get it passed

The DDiS Suzuki used is a Renault/Nissan engine and the HDi is a PSA/Ford engine. I'm not sure if they have anything in common, apart from both being lacklustre and dull. I imagine the diesel Jimnys also feature a different gearbox, as the next problem after making the engine fit is how you get the gear ratios right for a slow revving diesel engine. The standard petrol gearbox has close ratios and is geared for 4,000rpm at 70mph. Thats entirely unsuitable for a diesel.
