If that's the case George I'm not sure if this is good news or bad. The slightly thicker oil could be putting more physical load on the engine (like running the aircon). As turning the aircon off has been helping you this could be right. If the load margins are that tight and influencing the smart charge system the future doesn't look so bright. Chris

Its a 0w/20 oil - thinner.
The charging circuit is turned down to reduce engine load when it detects the engine is working hard, this is a function of the LIM circuit.
GeorgeC travels very short trips, his battery doesn't charge properly for some reason. Looking at the alternator volts, the alternator is rarely turned on. Either there is a fault in the circuit (I think there is a possible load sensor issue) or the car is working normally, it is just sensing the engine is loaded.
By turning off the Aircon this disconnects the compressor clutch and this has improved things. Equally, what GeorgeC is talking about here is changing the oil back to the Suzuki recommended thinner oil 0w/20 which the official manual says "Improves starting". Suzuki Australia seem to replace the oil on initial delivery with thicker oil. Again since changing to thinner oil the charging seems to improve.

I'd never heard of a LIM (I've just looked it up), I dislike it already. Sounds like sinister spyware. Thanks Martin. Chris

Changing from 5w/30 to 5w/20 won't affect starting as both oils have the same cold viscosity.
As for starting a hot engine, unless you are in a very cold climate (below about -20c) it won't make any difference then either.

its 0w NOT 5w - George mistyped. I explained that later on
