I didnt build my Jimny originally, it was already in the basic form that you see it. I have replaced or improved parts where the originals have failed or were poor quality. Therefore it came with a 3" lift and still has one although I replaced it with far better springs and shocks. The problem is the slippery slope of modification, once you start....
Larger tyres >> Lift Kit >> Gearing correction >> castor correction >> increased bearing wear etc. etc.
Dont get me wrong, I love the look of mine. but it is more look than practical. You see a lot like mine at events and they mistake true capability for kinetic energy. A truly capable truck will crawl over an obstacle without the wheels spinning ie. its got the grip, low down power and flex. Instead you will see the Jimny hurled at the obstacle with the engine screaming and wheels spinning using kinetic energy rather than skill or capability. If you were to fire a concrete block at a hill fast enough it would go up it
So with our Gen4 it will get mud tyres and a 2" lift to give the muds a tiny bit more room and that is it. I fully expect to see it happily following BigJimny around and half expect to see a picture of it pulling BigJimny out after BigJimny blowing a CV joint due to the large tyres and red mist
As an example, I bet this owner is please with the look but not as pleased as his CV joint and bearing supplier
Martin
2003 M13 early KAP build.
3" Trailmaster lift with 1.5 Spacers on front
Customised winch bumper and roll cage
235/85R16 Maxxis Bighorns on 16" Rims, 4:1 Rocklobster, Rear ARB locker and on-board air
Corrected arms all-round, rear disks, Recaro seats and harnesses

How about the lift? Is that something you regret?

It almost sounds like I might be getting a few converts to the less is more camp! Though if Dreadnaught weren't a company car there wouldn't be any interior apart from carbon fiber chairs and aluminium controls also any mechanical parts that aren't really necessary like electric windows or power steering would be in the bin too. Because race car.

Hi Daniel,
What underbody parts are the most important to protect in your opinion? This lightness thing we're talking about has really opened my eyes to this modding thing.

On the gen3 it's definitely the transfer box mounting brackets and then the damper lower mounts that suffer most. On the gen4 though they seem to have moved the transfer box slightly above the bottom of the chassis making it less likely to take damage. I would still look at the damper mounts though, but until people start beating the gen4 up off road it's going to be difficult to judge.

As Lambert said but I would get a transfer box gaurd anyway as I personally think it's a very open important area....... Especially from the marks on my gen 3 one
