Jimnys are frequently towed behind Motorhomes in Australia. Hitch n go being the most common attachment method. I'm sure the UK has something similar.

hitchngo.com.au/why-a-frame.html

Tows vehicle with all 4 wheels on the flat

Collapse when not in use to save space

Mechanically connect to Jimnys' brake pedal

These "Hitch n Go's" only take about 5 mins to connect...simples

There are a few on ebay but I'm not sure if they include the parts needed to connect the brake to the car?
Do a search for "braked A frame"
They cost app £1000 fitted new.
A 2 wheel dolly is illegal braked or otherwise as they are only supposed to be used for recovery to a garage or a safe place.

The owners manual puts restrictions on towing which I believe is transfer box related so disconnecting rear prop shaft would probably be advisable?

I started off high and worked my way down ever since :-)

Well I've spent the whole weekend deep in reading and research, and based on the invaluable comments posted by you guys, I've made a monumental decision.....

1. Hiring even a very small car for a weeks in whatever location I happen to be works out at an average of £175 p/w,....not far off a grand a year:woohoo:
2. Towing any one of my Jimnys is definitely out for reasons posted by yourselves, can't put one on a trailer because my max towable weight is 1250kgs.

So....spent the afternoon talking to Armitage Trailers in Ferrybridge, who will fabricate and fit a bespoke towbar/underrun protection c/w all (canbus) electrics.....also supply type-approved and braked A-frame...and to go with all this....I purchased a 63-plate Citroen C1 (weight 870kgs) to which the A-frame will be attached !!

Sorted !! Total weight less than 1 te, no trailer to store, zero tax on C1, can't wait to get going now...Tour de Scotland here we come!!

Thanks for all the replies, fellas....certainly helped me make up my mind....watch out for one of the Jims coming on the market !!!!

Be very very careful. As you will have discovered, as soon as you put a car onto an A frame behind another vehicle it immediately becomes a trailer and is subject to the laws governing them, most notably as i mentioned above the brakes have to operate on all axles at 50pc efficiency and it will also be required to be either type or individually approved as a trailer even though it is already type approved as a passenger vehicle. Getting the brakes to the correct standard for a trailer is not simply a matter of a cable to the foot pedal not least because of the servo but also the efficiency. Also be aware that as far as I am aware it is your responsibility for using such an A frame to be legal not the person selling it to you. Then there is the issue of insurance because as you well know they will drop you like you are hot in the event of a claim if they have even the slightest opportunity. If you are determined to go this way you need to find a car with a mam less than 750kg as that gets you out of the braking mine field at least. Be sure that you are safe and legal before dumping a tonne of cash into this.
