Although that worked it means there is a fault that is not going to go away and one day the "tap" will not work and you could be stranded. Best to plan a removal inspection clean and if all good a refit of the motor just to ascertain if it needs a new one or it was a loose connection or corroded terminals, muck or the like.

It's the solenoid getting stuck. The only way to fix it is to change the whole starter or just the solenoid.

Yes, all correct, thank you....
Luckily there are lots of hills here so thats not a problem, but I'll follow Mickt and Kirkynut's advice and replace it in the spring when I have sourced one and the weather improves...
A little risky I know to wait, but hell, life's full of risks.....

It's not a risk if you're on a hill or know you can get a push to start it. Jimny's start pretty easily. I've driven a lot of miles in Australia in a car that I had to park on a hill or get a push to start (Nissan Patrol, so getting a push wasn't always easy!). Eventually had to sort the starter out when the clutch slave cylinder failed so it had to be started it in gear. Then had to drive another 700km with no clutch until I could get a new slave cylinder. Nothing is impossible!
