If I knew I had a notably worn track rod end or other item to cause a fail I'd replace it before going for an MoT. :whistle:

I thought that they were mostly meant for testing the suspension on active ride vehicles where you can't test the damping using the old 'bounce a corner' test.

Edit; Now I've watched the video I see that they are a good deal more complex than simple 'up and down' movement.

Some Suzukis and a bunch of motorcycles.

possibly fail on say emission badly and if a cheep car mite as well buy a new one so no point forking out for ballpoints etc and spending time to fine out it needs a new cat and a load of other hidden stuff that you missed

Exactly. They aren't all my cars, I don't want to put a day aside for fixing them before the MOT and then find they fail on something I missed. I do a quick check for anything obvious then let the MOT man tell me the rest! On modern discoveries and range rovers, the suspension is so cumbersome and complicated that poking around with a bar trying to find worn bushes is pretty hopeless. Luckily the wobble plates makes that bit easier for us all!

Shaker plates are not the be all and end all of fault finding in car suspension systems. I had mine on a mates ramp for well over 2 hours shaking it so much as to get a resonance frequency building up but even such vigorous abuse did not highlight the panhard to axle bolt not being at the correct torque and causing a fairly terminal sounding clunking noise. Eventually found it by applying dynamic load on a side slope and turning the steering.

Just remember that the mot only applies to the things tested at the time of the test and whilst it remains current for a year it does not mean that the car tested is necessarily roadworthy, legal or indeed safe on any other day of the year. It is up to us as responsible vehicle users to keep the vehicle well maintained at all times, after all plod and others can request a new mot at any time.

I'd love to hear that noise as I have a clonking noise that sounds like a door hinge and it is driving me barmy.

I think most people (90%) would think that the MoT is the only time they ever check anything underneath. :whistle:
