That's interesting and reassuring.

In fact I one of them said something like that and I thought he was joshing when he said that the testers were getting lazy *$*$*$*$*$'.

+1 on what idiotmobil said. Until last month i was an mot tester and have tested vehicles on a shaker plate and found nothing wrong, then jacked them up and found knackered balljoints and trackrod ends. On my last refresher course the vosa tutor actually said if the play could not be detected using the plates the vehicle should not be failed as components should be tested in their normal working position, ie with weight on the wheels and not hanging when jacked up. His next comment was we don't make the rules we only enforce them

The last 2 Mot's I had have been on a shaker - and nothing to worry about, just lets them see track rod ends, springs, exhaust clamps etc.

Totally missed my knackered kingpin bearings

I think it will highlight exceptionally worn bushes but how the heck are they to see small amounts of play that have large effects on the driving of the car? Each movement is over in the blink of an eye. A lever bar allows him to see at leisure.

I don't rely on the mot to ensure my cars are safe but it's re - assuring to know it's been checked by a pro. I choose a pro too rather than Kwikfit con artists too!

The wobble plates in the video aren't typical of those currently fitted in MOT centres. The manual ones have a much lower range of movement. The wobble plate more-accurately represents some of the stresses of driving a car that prodding a metal bar in between things and yanking on it doesn't. This is quite important as suspension systems get more complicated (not everyone drives a Jimny you know ;) )

Every car I've put through a test (around 10 a year?) over the past 4 years has been checked on one. They've never missed a fault I knew was there (from testing with a bar and my hands), and have found some that I didn't.

As for it being bad for the car... ever driven around a corner? The movement in the bushes is much the same.
