never a sand dune but they perfectly well on the beach in soft sand and mud and shingle

It depends on the size of the turbo, keep it reasonably small and it will spool up much quicker.

Some Suzukis and a bunch of motorcycles.

well not necessarily a small turbo but smaller inter-cooler and piping would make it alot more responsive, i do 80% of my 4x4ing in sand so for most hill climbs she is sitting on about 5500-6000 RPM and floats up everything... as Dave said the money would be spent on the rollers getting it tuned right... if you were to plan it right and sorce your parts for the right price you could get great results.....
