Today I fitted a K&N air filter.

Considering the standard paper filter is still new, I was astonished at the change it made. The car seemed much more responsive and even my passenger noticed the engine seemed significantly smoother!

I've never fitted a K&N filter in any car I've owned, until now. I'm completely converted.
Well done K&N!

Ok I'm interested! Why was there such a significant difference between the two?

I have absolutely no idea other than...
The paper filter has a foam base to it and the paper material is quite thick; hold the K&N up to the light and you can see through it!

The only real reason for one is that it's cleanable which over a decent ownership period is cheaper than a new paper one every 9 months. The rest is psychosomatic.

Reminded me of the lyrics for "The Final Countdown" by Europe which someone told me is not about nuclear weapons or space travel, but actually the hunt for simultaneous orgasms.. Can't listen to that song anymore without laughing my head off..

Anyways, filled my "new" gearbox and mounted the rest of the loose parts and went for a wonderful test drive yesterday. been two weeks without my Jimny, so it's nice to have it back..

Got to disagree Lambert, I'm experienced enough to ignore a little induction roar and the vvt definitely felt smoother running, had better pick up and it improved low end torque.

The original paper filter was 7k old when removed, a bit of dust in the inlet area but not too bad. It must be an area of restriction in the intake system on standard cars, my only explanation.

The car cruises up a local 30mph hill in fourth now, prior to the filter change, it was so laboured that a down change to third was needed. The filter was the only change on the car.

The change is definite, I wouldn't like to say that it has added power (my guess is it has) but it certainly has changed the way the power is delivered and that has been an improvement.

Max - In recent weeks I did K&N, super unleaded and mobil one. The car feels completely different, the oil has given a new lease to the vvt.
