If it cost over £40,000 new, wouldn't it fall into the luxury VED band if it were a car?  Or were the converters actually the first owners on the VED?

lt was most likely bought as a standard Commercial for around £22,000 and then modified afterwards so the person who bought it for £40,000 was effectively the second owner.

Definetly still pays Van tax regardless if it has seats fitted and would still be classed as a van insurance wise. Modified vehicles is a tricky one to value.  Mods in general don't really add any value and can even devalue the car which is why if you do modify your Jimny it's best if it can be reversed and put back to standard as the car will appeal to more people & dealers buying it back. However if the Mods are exclusive such as bodykits, wheels & the brand itself is big then that can up the value a car. Look at Urban automotive & Twisted. Essentially they are putting their kits onto cars which anybody could do but its the brand they have created where instead of just a Range Rover you have an Urban Range Rover and out in the public you can then spot the difference between them. Brand is key.  Speaking to twisted at a show last year its clear that the average Jimny owner isn't the people they are trying to appeal to. They tend to sell to wealthy people who want a holiday car for their holiday home around the country as a run about vehicle or for the kids to use. That owner doesn't look at normal Jimnys in dealerships or the used market. They buy into the brand they like. Will be interesting to see how imported jimnys values handle and will it efffect UK cars such as the rare auto variants and now there is plenty to choose from.

The benefit to the LCV is that it's +VAT, so it makes financial sense to put it through my business. Glad to see it's caused a stir!

Well, even at that price it would be a better long term purchase than most new vehicles.
In a few years your new car is worth maybe 30% of the price you paid.
This Jimny if looked after will likely still be worth at least £20,000 in five years time.

For example
My friend bought a new Ford C-Max in 2018 and it's currently worth around 33% of what he paid for it.

The Jimny being a Commercial Vehicle you could also claim the tax back if you put it through a business.
