Strange thing though - the radio seems to be working OK with good, consistent sound on stations I don't want (ie Radio 1, commercial stations and the local BBC station - ugh) but the one I do want (Please don't laugh - Radio 2) is a bu**er. I can get it, but it fades, drops out and is generally poor. But in my car, parked next to the Jimny, it's fine and dandy.
Definitely saving for a different set of speakers and hopefully, one day, will have a decent set-up to scare the wildlife

Is the AF working?? Is the aerial fully out? It should extend out about a metre. There are some cheap replacement aerials about on ebay but they are only 2 section. The genuine aerial is more than this. I've replaced one on an Alto which I believe may be similar??
re the ipod thing I just fitted an fm transmitter mp3 player and I've had absolutely no trouble with it and have around 6hrs playtime on the sd card. I've never had any trouble with interference on the recommended frequency from Northants to the very north tip of Scotland.
Some large cities may have problems if the lower frequencies are in use by local stations.
I started off high and worked my way down ever since

But what you said about the aerial is interesting, as the one on the roof certainly is not a metre - it's quite stubby and a 2-part job so has obviously been replaced at some point. That probably is the answer then.
Thanks

Cam Suzuki have a used one for £35 on ebay but I'm sure you could get a cheaper one?
I've not fitted a Jimny one but if it's anything like the Alto it's only a half hour job!
Here's the cheap one

I rebuilt my aerial using the telescopic part from another old aerial. The sizing is reasonably standard and it all comes apart very easily. You would never know this is two aerials grafted together.

I found that the rubber seat does not really keep the water out as its a poor fit, so I have put mastic under it to seal it.

Seating the seal is key, using silicone is a good idea.
