recently went on holiday, our log cabin was 200 miles from my house brimmed the tank and did it on 3/4s of a tank so fuel economy on a long run aint bad and that was on mud tyres!!!didnt exceed 60mph tho,get above 60 and it drinks it but then it is about as aerodynamic as a brick!!!
i hate mine but love it too, mines mainly offroad but my brother stole my van so useing as my daily drive and now hate it even more but then i get out lanning or playing and the noises dissaper the fuel guage doesnt matter and im happy wouldnt sell mine one main reason ive spent well more than its worth would like some thing like a deisel pegero or similar to do long trips exploring and adventures as im in to all that

Petrol - well I have driven only 4x4s for centuries so I don't know what it is like to get 50+mpg. I put a tenner in this motor and it lasts and lasts and lasts.
Speed.............could be luck, it's a little stormer, slightly nippy in the burbs but certainly no slouch on the motorway.

If there's only 2 of you & you don't use the rear seats then as has been said, for short term overlanding what more do you need. Also, as has been mentioned, use a trailor, have a look at what the Aussies do, there are several on here.
When modified and with extreme tread patterns, believe me, quick is not desirable. Try stopping any 4x4 in the wet with extreme muddies on!
I use my rear seats in the bad weather and whilst at the moment there's only the Mrs & I, we are looking to expand upon that. I shall therefore be considering my options but I have too much invested in my Jimjam that I won't get back, I think I shall have to just get more clever with my storage solutions!

For us the main advantage of the jimny is two fold first because it is light it makes less mess in the fields than the defender and second because it is light it uses at least 800 to 900 quid a year less fuel than the defender for the same milage. However because it is light it won't tow anything like what the defender will so it's not all roses by any means.

Going back to the OP's original comments, I'm in a situation where I've spent so much money I won't get back and you commented that you don't want to spend money on something you'll end up selling, whereby finding yourself in the situation I'm in now!
I do love my Jimny though and one other advantage I have with a Jimjam is that it fits in my garage & can still be jacked up & worked on in the warmish & dry.

That's how I ended up keeping my SJ for 20+ years and I wish I hadn't sold it but it was manual (though a lovely gearbox) and it did not have power steering (though I wish I'd kept the thing and modded that). And in the end it is worth more as a vehicle to use than to sell. I have had mostly 'keeper' motors generally around 10 years per.
You have my respect with the task of putting the rear seats back in as and when, like the ARB, the choice for me is either always on or always off period. I could never use my Jimny as a main car - it'd drive me barmy at my age.
