Reasons to keep jimny.help,

Hi guys,

Why do you guys keep your jimny's?

I have a 2009 VVT and i am looking at putting a minilobster, a sj 410 box and a rear difflock in it,

But there are some issues that i still have regarding the jimny namely very little cargo space and an underpowered 1300cc engine,

So i am thinking perhaps gearing and a difflock might be waste of money if i am going to sell it in the next 5 to 10 years,

So can you guys tell me why do you keep your jimny, i love the car but i assume most of you guys use it as a toy purely for an offroad purpose.

I have notice alot of parts are available for the jimny such as suspention parts, difflocks, reduction gears, roofracks, front and rear bars, rock sliders, which isnt a bad at all.

I mean the car does have solid axles and is pretty capable,

I really dont want to sell it, so on that note ,what are your guys opinions on this,

It is mostly not ideal for overlanding and longer trips i suppose with the limited space.

So if you guys need to justify to yourself for keeping the jimny , what comes to mind,

well they do make you smile and its funny going places landrover owners think you cant go

it all depends what your intended use is, if your looking for a vehicle you can take on overland week long excursions living out of your truck you have definately brought the wrong car!!(but only if your taking people in the back), if your looking for a road car and dont go offroad i would never buy one, dont see the point in a 4x4 if you stay on tarmac all the time.

on the load capacity side of things unless you take passengers in the back remove the rear seats (10min job) and you can get a surprising amount in the there (recently went on holiday with the misses so removed the seats and got 2 push bikes in the back along with a suitcase and other bits and bobs for the week with no issues). maybe a small trailer would suit your needs if having to carry passengers.

lack of power can be solved with an engine swap (or slap a turbo on it) if your really that bothered about getting overtaken by everything!

relativley cheap to run and maintain, quite fun to drive and can pretty much go anywhere especially with a few mods

mines my daily driver, needed something to put ladders on and something that would provide abit of excitement as my last car was a 1.8 20v turbo ibiza (substituted my need for speed with the ability to offroad).

Mine is a second car that I needed as my Wife and I go out on the same days.

I hired one in Corfu and loved it and had to have one. It's easy to fix with cheap parts and its great for laneing as well. I love mine and I hope to keep it for a very long time.

Bullet proof reliability in a nice small package that has surprisingly goat like offroaing prowess. My nephew and god daughters love it. My wife can drive it because its dinky, but has the ride height to give her a commanding view of the road.

Also I love them because they are crap on the road! Real characterful drive.

Love pissing about with it, easy to work on and LOADS of stuff to buy and mod until you run out of cash.

Loads of better things out there. But people don't always want better - they want entertaining!

Sometimes I even wonder why I got it never mind keep it.

I have no main dealer near.
The ride is enough to loosen my fillings.
It seems to be more rust prone than some I have had.
It is very cramped.
I don't use it in the wet.

I bought it because I had an SJ and many Vitaras previously.
I bought it because it is small and light and therefore easier to work on.
I bought it as i wanted it to be a true 4x4 with rear wheel drive, not like the Rav I had or one with electrickery.
I bought this particular one because it is an auto.

I bought this one cos it is pretty good bodywise compared to many I have seen.

I keep it because it is a second motor, like having a quad bike or motor bike.
I keep it as it was inexpensive to buy.
I keep it because it is cheap to insure, fairly cheap to tax and for a 4x4 it is economical.
I keep it cos it uses petrol and diesel seems to be getting more costly compared to petrol.

I'll flog it if I get fed up with the smoking.
I'll flog it in a flash if something better comes my way which fits the bill, maybe a Daihatsu Terios.
If I win the lottery I'll sell it and get a Skoda Yeti........then a Toyota Landcruiser then a chauffeur.

On balance it's entertaining but I don't find it that likeable.

If i will be doing overlanding then it will be purely only 2 persons.

And i love putting it through some tough paces, and engaging low range.

Im also really loving the size when i need to turn around or move into tight places or choose a line some larger 4x4's can drive,

Also i like the light mass and being alot easier to recover,

Mine is to be honest in my eyes crap but ...

It has character,still amzes me every time i off road it,quirky.

i removed the rear seats in mine as they were knackered and fitted a 1.6 to sort the lack of power.

maneuverability is great, where a defender will do a ten point turn in a lane ill just whip it round (specially if its muddy in RWD, doughnut it round :laugh: )

if your regularly overlanding in it remove the rear seats build a flat floor out of ply wood or something then you have loads of space, alot of people on here run no seats with cleaver storage solutions for regularly carried kit.

dont sell it you'll only miss its charisma :laugh:

To be honest, there are a lot of reasons NOT to have a jimny, the first being the cost of running the thing, my maintenance figure is low, but my tax, insurance and petrol is not cheap.the car is also not practical, mine can't cruise at 60, it's hopeless for long journeys as fuel economy is bad.
However as soon as I get in my jimny, I forget it all, I love my little truck, it's qwerky and it's great fun, it's a disease! I can't sell it!

See now..................... I find it is cheap on tax ins. and fuel for a fourbie and in fairness it can travel at the legal limit with ease.
