Had the ignition key jam in the barrel. RAC man disconnected the steering lock but the key still wont turn. Any ideas? How dangerous is it to disconnect the airbag and remove the steering column? How does one disconnect the airbag safely? Looking forward to some answers. Thanks Ian. :(

I'm led to believe that if the battery is disconnected for 1/2 hour or so, the capacitors in the airbag system will drain to make it safe to disconnect them. Perhaps leaving the battery disconnected for a little longer to be on the safe side would be an idea.

Make sure you have any radio codes first or you'll not be able to use that after you re-connect the battery.

Check with a garage that this is the case withthe disconnecting the battery but I'm sure it's right.

I'm not too sure you need to disconnect the airbag to sort this out though. You've probably just got to attack the ignition barrel and perhaps remove it witht the key in if possible, not done it on a car so new myself.

Then you could perhaps dismantle the old ignition barrel and fit a new one. i don't know how this effects the transponder for the key.

Have you tried simply turning the wheel to take the pressure off the steering olock and trying to turn the key whilst the pressure is off or is it stuck fast?
