The last time I toured Scotland in the SJ I  never let my tank drop below half way due to the lack of fuel stations. As I don't see charging points popping up like weeds in a lawn, any idea of touring Scotland in a car with a theoretical range of 200 miles will see you grow grey hairs faster than Charles 1st waiting for the axe.

We have 12 solar panels on the roof and a 11kWh battery bank. Over the course of a year we expect to generate 3,600kWh, much more in summer than in winter. Our payback is about 9 years, after that everything we generate is for nothing, we are 2 1/4 years in. Or look at it another way, it’s return on investment is about 11% per year.

What is the projected battery lifespan?

6,000 cycles to 90%, that is 16 years if it is once per day (which it typically is) and they are guaranteed for 10 years.

We don't dip below 50% charge in the summer, so we might get more than 6,000 cycles before they degrade. There is two battery banks, so it would be fairly easy to change one out if it went faulty.

While there’s definitely less public rapid chargers up there, there’s plenty of people who do the NC500 in an EV as issues are largely part of the anti EV hype. Here’s a four year old video of someone doing it in a BMW i3, a car that was sold as a city car with a moderate range and which ceased being made a couple of years ago.

And on the original comments re Ford EV’s, if they are selling them off cheaply then it’s probably because they’re not very good. Let’s face it they make the Mustang which is large and not as good as the competition. They’ve now got the new Explorer which is also large and based upon the VW iD7 platform. As one EV commentator on YouTube says, legacy car companies haven’t done great so far in making EV’s, compared to those who started from scratch.

To add, when I first did the NC500 about 35 years ago I was surprised to find one village petrol station had a hand wound petrol pump. I’d not seen one before. When I last did the NC500 seven years ago we had five overnight stays. I looked a little while ago and one no longer offers B&B but two of the remaining four now have home chargers for customer overnight charging. That’s absolutely ideal for NC500 drivers. The moral is, times move on and things change to meet demand.
