help , MOT fail was created by rooster
hi guys. jinboy failed mot today  . only two problems though, exhaust silencer , easy one, second defect o/s/f swivel joint excessive play ? any help on this please , would it be kingpin or wheel bearing? . im sure someone has had this before . have not had a look myself yet just going on what mot man is saying. funny thing is the exhaust never sounded like it was blowing, i did ask if it could be welded but they said no it needs a new one. just waiting for them to quote me but might do it myself depending on the swivel joint ?

dont know about the wording yet . garage closed before i could get there but the guy i spoke to on the phone is a complete idiot. i have told them i will try to get down there tomorrow and inspect myself. i phoned and asked for him to clarify what work needed doing with regards to the swivel play and he said he was unsure , to which i replied how do you know what parts to quote for then? . i then told him what parts i wanted quoting for and he said , mot , silencer , o/s kingpin bearings and seal £300 all in. fitted (2hrs labour). i also asked has the silencer got a hole , is it split etc etc and his reply .... it just needs a new one! .i am thinking small hole if any as never heard it blowing.

my thoughts exactly. but tomorrow when i go the the garage and get out my van with a dti gauge and start checking the kingpin lift , then if it has passed the emissions test, question how it can with a silencer that is deemed as unrepairable and needs replacing. i think it might get heated . if a job needs doing fair enough but when this guy does not seem to know what day it is , then im affraid hes gonna get it . got a breakdown of prices ; silencer £59 +vat , seal £27 +vat , bearing £24.23 +vat , mot £45 and labour 2hrs £76 +vat. and to finish it off he said you can only get these parts from suzuki to which i said funny that im on euro parts and its all there and the good old electronic bay , needless to say he did not respond. Now i am also trying to find out the form code you can request to appeal the mot , and also thinking he aint gonna get his mot money either. these people rattle my cage

go on www.directgov and look at the mot history you can find out what it failed on dont for get hes got your car in my garage you dont pay you dont get car just pay the mot and then you have 10 working days for a full retest as for the exhaust the only thing i can think of is that they failed it due to the outer skin of the exhaust is rotten

King pins are best part of £40 each (No-one but a garage changes them though ) so 2 is £80
Bearings and seals are about £90 for genuine suzuki.
Rear silencer and centre pipe (usually, the pipe rots at the silencer joint and will break when changing the silencer) £70
2 hours labour around £90 (wish I earned money that fast)

£300 including the MOT isn't too bad.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)
