Having recently made the same transition I can honestly say that a well set up jimny is an absolute pleasure compared to the defender. Each time I get back into the defender I am struck by just how much of a wagon it actually is, big, heavy, ponderous thing that it is but in fairness to it there are some things you can only do in a defender especially in farming. As a car though the jimny wins every time.

I think towing is about the only thing you can't do isn't it? I'm not a farmer out there doing it though.

The defender will carry more than 3 times that of the jimny so getting sheep food is easier also being a covered pickup it is not unreasonable to occasionally lift the odd lamb or 3 into the back and save a trailer trip. That and it fits ruts left by other land rovers without too many issues. As a tool to do work the defender is king of the hill but as an every day car it is seriously flawed

For everyday use, I'd get a Toyota Land Cruiser or Hilux. Much more reliable.

Reliability of any car is directly linked to the level of maintenance afforded the vehicle, not who made it in the first place.

So very wrong.

Some cars are far more reliable than others. And Land Rover are not what you'd call a reliable car when comparing to almost all japanese cars. Toyota especially.

Same thing with Italian and some French cars.
Why do you think that all 4x4's on Greenland, in Africa and similar places with harsh environment are Toyotas? There's a pretty good reason. They are much more reliable and last much longer than any other 4x4, and that's a fact.

For comp use I'd love a Defender. Lots of great suspension, engine, axle stuff available. For all other use requiring a 4x4, I'd get a Land Cruiser or Nissan Patrol, if I couldn't afford a Land Cruiser :)
