thanks to Jake (thinking outside the box) he demonstrated that it was possible to fit larger 130mm speakers (as opposed to 100mm) in the front foot-wells .... but it does need a little work
on the left my original 100mm (these were an upgrade on the original OEMs), and in the right corner, the 130mm 3-way upgrades.
here's the left footwell panel
deciding the best position and marking up
WARNING - as speakers come with different dia and length magnets, check your particular speakers for positioning first by offering them up to the metal speaker holes in the foot-wells - it may mean you have to cut out the plastic panel centrally and not not offset like I have, to make the finished assembly fit
dremelling out
ready to fit
a bit strengthening, flattened out the clips to use as "nuts"
fitted in the panel
fitted in the footwell
well pleased, much improved sound

Excellent idea! I've got some 125mm speakers kicking about. That's given me a nice little job for this evening

tested it out proper today and sound is so much better
only regret now is not getting slightly better speakers such as the clarions I've fitted in the rear
as they sound even better ( see here ),
but hey, for £20 I'm a happy bunny as I'm tight, and anyway I'm getting deafer ....... so the wife says

Got mine in
Did you find the speakers hit the metalwork behind? I had some issues getting the speaker magnets lined up to sit in the old speaker holes but got there in the end. I notice your speakers were fairly shallow mounting- mine are quite deep which obviously doesn't help!
The sound is a definite improvement over standard, although still very much 'a speaker screwed to a bit of trim' quality!
Thanks for the tip Halford

For front speakers those are fine. Don't beat yourself up over it Mr. H.
