my first MIG welding project

decided to utilise the rear grab handle fixings to make a rigid assembly for attaching my cargo net to.



the screws are M6 with a 12mm shoulder (i.e. when screwed in, they still have 12mm exposed until the head of the screw), the distance between centres is 157mm.



so bought a length of 30mm x 3mm bar from Wickes (as don't know where to get metal from at a decent price yet)

marked it out



and made a couple of flat bar plates



used M8 nuts as spacers and fitted the plates and realised they were angled to the vertical - maybe about 30'



so measured the top of the plate (plate to plate) as 985mm and the bottom of the plate (plate to plate) as 1018mm.

acquired some 30mm tubing courtesy of a binned retail clothes rail (crossed my toes and cut it on an angle ).



got out my newly acquired MIG welder and did a couple of tacks.



tried it out for size, then did the main welds - and boy are they ugly, :blush:

but they're rock solid



fitted the bar



attached the cargo net, very secure, happy bunny :woohoo:



what welding project will I do next,

better get some practice I think :whistle:

As long as the weld is mechanically sound it'll be OK and if looks are important use your grinder to clean them up.

You'll find all sorts to weld as time goes on - then you will have a chance to improve.

I get my small steel needs from eBay sellers or buy something from Argos that I can plunder.

whichever you order remember that pre 2005 models have a wide high level brake light, and post 2005 have the smaller version, see mine below, using 2nd hand ebay blinds from a pre 2005 on my post 2005 Jimny - hence the gap at the sides
