Whistelling sound above 80km/h?!? was created by Strek
Hi everybody.
My 2000 Jimny has worked perfekt until now, and the first "problem" have appeared. Yesterday, I was out on a long trip, most of the trip on the highway with speed between 60 and 100 km/h. Around 80km/h it started making a wisstlesound. Almost like if it was wearing 33's muds, but it's currently running stock. I thought it might be some air passing trough some place, causing the sound. When slowing down, it dissapeared around app 60-70km/h. After a while, like one hour, it bekame a bit worse and higher, but still just above app 70 km/h. When listening, I find it very difficult to hear if it's from the front or the rear, or underneath the car. When driving in a tunnel, it is really high. So, strange sound, nothing else, no wobble, engine rattle, etc.

Any ideas?

Is it definately a whistle not a squeek? A whistle must be air related. Have you checked no trim is loose etc?

Hm. Might be a squeek. A bit darker than whistelling actually. I'm not sure, but something tells me that its not just air-related. I'm thinking bearings etc, but I'm certainly not interrested in disassembly and changings if its not the cause. And shouldnt then the symptoms also be present at lower speed, if it was any bearings?

Its a hardtop by the way. The music is louder now..

I had a whistling at higher speeds, that turned into a whirring, that gradually turned into a humming over about 500 miles. It sort of crept up on me to the point where I was turning the radio and the fan off trying to hear it and figure out where it was coming from.

I hope it is a rear wheel bearing, at least one of the wheels feels rough to turn. I just bought a wheelbearing kit from the shop (thanks Martin) and I will fit it on Saturday. Likely I will need new brake cylinders or something so it won't go back together :S

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

Sounds similar I guess. Keep this thread updated after the bearing change! And good luck on that one also!

But again, wouldnt the bearing sound bad even at low speed?
