Been out and about in the country lanes and I slid down a hill too. in the end I just drove into the side of the bank to get fresh snow / dirt. when its ice, there is NOTHING you can do .... keep wheels straight and hold on tight. Studs and chains are your only option

I do a lot of driving for my work and use a 4x4 Ford Ranger with MTs so not the best tyre for ice. I lost it at about 15-20mph in 2wd while rounding a bend on a fairly steep decent and was heading straight for a parked car. I was probably knowing me in 3rd gear at about 1500 revs (yes I know but I always drive like that as its diesel so will plod all day like that, less gear changes for my old knees). I dipped the clutch and slipped it into 2nd which matched the road speed and tyre speed better which allowed me to regain traction and avoided a pile of paperwork. Dont know if this is correct procedure but it worked for me and has got to be worth a try, I think the alternative is the fast dabbing of brakes to replicate the ABS effect. But as stated if the hill is to steep and your sliding to fast best to look for something soft to land in
