Ice and 4wd was created by Iain
Hi I thought i would share my experience of coming down a steep ice covered tarmac road in dorset and ask for any tips on what i could do next time.

I was in 4wd low box in first gear letting the engine brake down the hill ,then the car just slid down the hill like a toboggan, light brakeing did nothing, so i began do pump them a bit harder but the road turned and i ended up thumping the bank then a barrier. then drove off fine

When i got to the bottom there was a ROAD CLOSED sign lol

any suggestions????

Iain

Yes, don't do that again. :)

If the road is ice, and you don't have studded tyres there is no grip and there is nothing you can do.

Well actually, what you can do is accelerate, to keep the wheels turning as fast as the car is sliding, this restores steering control, but I've never found this to be much help, you can't stop going down, just avoid things.

If you must go down a slope, make sure there is enough space to stop at the bottom.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there :)

accelerate as said or try and aim for the drifts/piles of snow at the sides of the road.
NOTHING will stop you on ice except maybe nails through the tyres.

Thankyou I'm just glad i had Rhino bumper to absorb the impact.

Do Snow chains have the same affect as studded tyres??

I would have thought chains would give you good grip on ice!
