I purchased a 2012 Jimny 1.3 about a month ago (104k miles). It's been absolutely fine for the 100 or so miles done mostly round town and short motorway journeys.
Yesterday however after 200 problem free miles of mostly clear motorway it overheated in traffic through roadworks. The engine struggled then cut out, temp gauge was up towards the top.
The coolant expansion bottle was about two inches past the fill line but the radiator empty.
Stranded, the AA had to be called who came out who refilled the coolant and all was fine for the 60 miles or so home. Seems to be fine again now.
I'm conscious this may want investigating so is there anything I can check at home? I'm only an entry level home mechanic when it comes to diagnosis so whilst I'm happy to swap a thermostat or similar, I don't have the tools or knowledge to test things like a head gasket.
The vehicle is technically under a 90 day warranty although I have to pay for diagnosis and it doesn't cover overheating related damage.
Sorry to hear that. It could be one of a number of things that caused the overheating such as a partially or full radiator blockage, a bad water pump or internal blockage from no coolant or the wrong kind of coolant but whatever it was that caused it and that specific thing may have been fixed prior to your ownership, but unfortunately once an m13 has overheated it will need a head gasket. The damage is likely very minor but they are very sensitive, not like the rover k series weak but once they go then they go. You can nurse them for years and throw parts at them again and again but ultimately you will have to do the head gasket.
