Rear brake backing plate was created by ThatIsTooMuch
Does the outer flange of the rear brake backing plate serve any purpose?
Mine have been hit by something on the motorway and started flaking off so thinking of grinding the outer ring back until my wheel bearings need doing and I can get it off to repair or replace then.

It helps to stiffen the back plate and it helps to keep krud from entering the brake system.
Which of those points came first is probably anyone's guess.

After a closer look both sides are very crusty and breaking apart so I’m using it as an opportunity to do a disc conversion before the MOT is due.
