As Lambert says, it's only momentary. I use a large syringe to test the hubs and that is more than enough to click them in and out. It's a very simple system.

If it suddenly breaks, go back to the last thing that you did before it broke and start looking there

As Lambert says, they have magnets to hold them, the vacuum only moves them across (well technically, it is air pressure acting on the side without vacuum that does it, which is why both pipes have to be clear, along with the little air filter on the valve block)
If you listen, they go Click-click when they come off, and Clack-clack when they engage as they hit the magnets (I actually think there is only a magnet holding it disengaged).

HI all
Do the Vacuum free wheeling hubs need to be bolted to the wheel hubs in a specific position ?Had to change a very wobbly wheel bearing recently and never even considered how the free wheeling hubs worked, the 4X4 warning light was intermit flashing or solid before but now just flashes, yes the vacuum pipes have corroded away they are getting re-piped this weekend, just wondering if i have two faults
cheers kevin

The hubs can go on in any position.
As long as you haven't damaged the rim on the hub nut when you unstaked it (It forms a vacuum seal against the thin oil seal in the hub) it should be ok.
Change the pipework, and before fitting it, take off the hub and make sure that you can blow through the two spigot tubes, air has to pass through the wheelbearing and hub, sometimes grease blocks one or more holes when changing the wheelbearing.

thanks for the quick reply, unfortunately the hub nut was damaged by a previous repairer (found this when i stripped it after buying the special socket) hopefully not too badly damage, but may explain the excess sealant around the hub and inside the small tubes, at least i know where to start looking after i change the pipes
thanks kevin
