Yeah the head is off mine. I've read it's meant to be possible without removing the head but it is an extremely fiddly job on the bench. I personally wouldn't attempt it in the car.

Good luck

My fear is it might be the piston rings and, then I'll "just" swap the engine if I can find one with low milage for the right price.
That's fiddly too but I know how to then.

Edit: I can get a SX4 112hp m16a from 2010 with 114000km for 420GBP-ish from a reputable breaker. hmm..

If your valves seal good I guess it could be done that way. Getting rope into the cylinder is certainly a trick, but you'd have to be a full scale magician to get the rope down the sparkplug / coil holes and into the cylinder properly on a Jimny 😁

Then you've got to get the valve springs off, the keepers can be fiddly little things.
I used a tool specially for removing valve springs on ohc engines, even though I had the head off, my g-clamp style one didn't quite cut the mustard as the "die" to compress the retainer was too large. Your success might vary on that though.

You could try it anyway, worst case you drop a valve and have to remove the head anyway.
Even worse I guess is dropping a valve keeper down the guts of the engine never to be seen again. 😬
