Valve stem oil seals was created by Sy
Good morning. Im trying to replace valve stem oil seals on an M13a but im having trouble seating them correctly. They seem very loose compared to the old ones I removed. Do they require a lot of force to fit?

Thanks, Simon.

Just done these on mine earlier in the yearr when I rebuilt it.

Yes they should be tight. I had to lean on them pretty hard - I think I used an appropriately sized 1/4 socket and extension from memory. You should feel them seat into the groove on the valve guide.

They will be loose to start off... Maybe you haven't seated them properly?

Just make sure you put the steel valve spring collar / washer down first. Don't ask how I know 🤔

They are also very difficult to remove without destroying them. Also, don't ask how I know. 😁

Thanks for that Hughes. I have a fitting tool to try now as the socket chewed the seal up. Did you use a hammer or just press them on with force?
I know what you mean about those washers lol 😆. I have put 8 valves back in place before I realised the seals might not be right!

Cheers 👍

I just leant on them on the bench. When I say leant pretty hard, it was just hand pressure, shouldn't need any mechanical force - but they shouldn't fly on.
I had the head dismantled on the bench with the valves out.
They will be a good firm fit. Shouldn't require excessive force.

They are a lot harder to remove than install due to the way they lock onto the groove in the valve guide, which might be throwing you off.

Thanks again. I thought they were all good until one fell out when putting a valve back in. It was difficult to remove the old ones so I was expecting a similar tight fit. I'll try again later as I have a new set of seals.

Cheers for the advice 👍

From your description it sounds like you both do this with the head off the engine?
Do you think it is "easily" done with the head still on by either putting air pressure or the rope inside the cylinder trick?

Mine spews blue smoke after low gear engine braking long downhills. havent checked for compression yet.
