This wasn't on a hard surface was it? And were there any associated banging noises before it started rattling?

When a gearbox gear fails, you get more than a little rattle -- you get a godawful racket that generally persists even when you are not trying the failed gear. Plus you get lots of pretty stuff coming out of the oil drain. After all, gears are hardened steel, so on those very rare occasions when they fail it is, as the kids say, epic.

It sure sounds like 4L was not quite fully meshed, I think @DrRobin's experience is very relevant and @yakuza is right about likely causes.I was towing a small trailer with a decent load of broken down furniture, and to clear a small incline i put my 3rd gen in 4Low, but when i let off the clutch in 1st gear the car wouldn't move, and something was rattling.

it was on asphalt, and there were no noises apart from the rattling, i might try the 4L again today and see if the lever is a little loose and not engaging completely, because my mechanic showed it did move a little in its place

The Jimny is part time 4WD and 4WD should NOT be used on an asphalt surface, this is clearly stated in the owner's manual, along with warnings of possible drive train damage.
