So i ran a few tests at the weekend on the noise issue. Hard to tell as the gearbox is very noisy, especially on over run.
The conclusion was to build as planned, keep the transfer box in L, disconnect the front prop. It won't eb the quietest but some sound deadening around the box and an oil change will improve it a bit.
I looked at other make transfer box, but hard to establish of they're any better. By design L range is for off-road where noise isn't so much an issue as having strong gears is. Hopefully it's helical cut even if a bit coarse.
So for now, that box is ticked as the way forward.
