Been looking at a slow oil leak on the SJ this afternoon.

It appears that the oil is leaking from the joint around the sump and that the pan has been off at some point in the past as it is plastered in orange sealant, the original sealant was black by the look of it.
I can see where oil is sitting on top of the orange sealant.

I have a brand new pan to fit and seal, what sealant would the jury recommend???

I can remember rebuilding engines in the 1980s, you had a choice of

Hermatite Red - Tricky to get off your jeans
Blue Hylomar - My mate’s choice as it was used on Rolls Royce

The orange stuff as I remember was ‘instant gasket’, the stuff you used to fix the old split gasket or applied to a gasket you made from a cornflakes packet.

I am sure there are better sealants now, probably a dedicated sump pan sealant. Is the new gasket you have cork or a modern material (I don’t know what was fitted originally)? If it’s cork you might need a different sealant.

Like a lot of parts on Suzuki engines it is a "gasketless" fitment. Just RTV from factory. There are some aftermarket gaskets available but I will be trying a stock build with RTV only

If I were you and are doing it without gasket I would lap the new pan. Best way is a sheet of wet and dry on a piece of glass or mdf then both surfaces are effectively machined and the sealant has the best chance.
