Is extending brake hoses different for a gen3 Jimny with ABS vs without?

Hey Jimny friends!

I've recently been looking into getting a 2" suspension lift for my 1998 gen3 JB33 Jimny (specifically the EFS kit which includes springs, shocks and castor correction bushes) and have been recommended by quite a few people to extend the break hoses as they can start getting a bit iffy around that height.

I was going to purchase the Hel set from Jimnybits but decided to research it to make sure I wasn't missing anything. I found what looks to be the same Hel kit on the Hel website but it specifies it's for a NON-ABS Jimny and I couldn't find a set the specifies it's for ABS... Believe it or not, my '98 Jim has ABS, so I'm not sure where to go from here.

What have other people done with regards to extending brake hoses and dealing with ABS? Was there something you had to do other than buy an extended brake hose kit? I've seen an ABS relocation kit for sale in SA (I'm in NZ) but I've never heard of anyone doing that on any of the Jimny forums/discussions I've seen. Am I overthinking this all?

I just fitted the longer lines to my last jimny and bled it up, that was a 2011 with abs.

So nothing special required for ABS? Did you buy pre-made hoses? If so, which ones? Thanks for the reply!

I think my extended hoses came with my lift kit. I have ABS too and I cannot quite see why ABS or not makes a difference for the front brake hoses. The brake calipers are the same.
Check if you need to clamp or strap them up to avoid contact with the tyres after mounting.

Relocating the ABS is for the gen4 with very much lift I guess, haven't heard of it being an issue on the gen3. I would not fiddle with the ABS pump, it is very expensive.

Okey! I wonder why Hel specified for non-ABS, it's really throwin' me off! Jimnybits also suggested the Hel kit to me... maybe it'll be alright then? I was hoping to order them in so that lift and hoses can go in at the same time but didn't want to waste my money on a purchase that wouldn't work.

Is the consensus here that they'll be fine? Or would the best thing be to just put the lift in then take see what's up?

As yakuza noted, the front hoses are likely the same. It's the back hoses where you may have a variance.

The HEL kit photo you posted shows a single hose for the rear. This is a typical setup for a sold-rear-axle car with no ABS. However with ABS, you may have a separate circuit for each wheel, which means two hoses for the rear.

I do remember reading something like that somewhere on a forum but couldn't re-find it haha. I wonder if it's worth getting the lift done, then taking it to a brake specialist afterwards to assess the situation & make custom lines? Someone mentioned that could be quite expensive though - you guys have any leads for alternatives?

Typically, hydraulic hoses in various lengths with appropriate connectors are available off the shelf -- there probably is no need to have them custom-made. Worth talking to your brake specialist before you dive in, though, if only to save time during the fit-out.

Note when talking to the brake man that often specialists will use the word "lines" to refer only to the steel or alloy (hard) lines in the system, and will say "hoses" for the flexible sections.  Just FYI for when you are having those discussions.

I got mine from a member on here. They were extended but I wasn't after that so much as them being braided and therefore stronger and better pedal feel. My 2011 had one rear line even with abs but my current very late gen3 has 2 at the back as it has traction control so has to be able to fire each brake separately

There is a real possibility that you might wreck some of the brake pipes because of seized and rusty connections. The motor factors in my area cut brake pipes to length from a huge roll and install the end nipples, which is not expensive. Then I use a pipe bending tool to bend the them into shape. Ask for cut-offs to practice your bending.
