I believe what moadi means is that the hubs are permanently locked in but 4 wheel drive has not been selected within the T.box.

In which scenario as I have attempted to describe the wheels are making the front driveline move instead of the driveline making the wheels move. Therefore in each state the loading applied to the cv is in a different direction and is likely to produce different noises.

I see what you mean, makes sense, I will take out the CV joint later this weekend to check for signs of wear
