Coolant vapor though air con exits

Hi,

Yesterday I had a long trip. Today when I started the car, as soon as it got to normal temp, a lot of vapor started coming out of the air conditioning exits in the cabin (I rarely use the air con and I wasnt using it when it started) and this vapor has a "sweet" smell to it, which I think is the coolant. Any quick fix to avoid inhaling this (probably toxic) vapor all the way home.

​It seems it was definitely coolant as when checking the radiator, it was missing around 1 liter of coolant. Thankfully the car wasn't overheating.


I was thinking .maybe there is a way to avoid the coolant going into the air con by blocking any of the hoses that feeds coolant to the air con system (I haven't really looked into it, as I'm waiting for Tomorrow morning.) Or maybe someone here has a better quick fix while I'm able to get it to the mechanic. Any feedback is appreciated.

FYI, I won't be needing hot air anytime soon as I live in the tropic.

Also, I don't think coolant is leaking inside the engine bay, as when I opened it there was no vapor, smell or any leak that I could see. That was I think the issue is somewhere in the air con system

If you are sure that the engine side is good it's easy enough to loop the heater hose together you will just need a suitable diameter bit of rigid pipe to give you something to sleeve the hoses and clamp them so they don't leak.

Are you sure you are leaking at all?

At certain combinations of humidity, air pressure and temperature your airconditioning will achieve "dew point" which means the water vapour in the air will condense and create a vapour cloud. You then get a cloud from the vents. My Range Rover does do this and I have also seen it on passenger aircraft.

Doesnt explain the smell but that could just be bacteria on the evaporator plate.

Im sure it wasn't normal as the amount of vapor is a lot, almost like being in a sauna. And I did 2 small trips (with air con off) and both times the vapor started coming out when reaching normal temp

Don't disturb those they are the refrigerant lines and contain gases that are bad for you and the environment. The ones you want are on the bulkhead and feed the heater matrix. I'm still at work or I would photo them for you.

I think I found the hoses that you are referring to. I'm guessing these should be loop at the engine side. If so would it be possible that the top hose can reach the engine exit of the bottom hose? Or will I definitely need a pipe to connect both?
