Hi everyone. So I got another question for you guys.
My Jimny has a gear whine, whenever I drive, so this made me wonder whether the 2012 model perhaps had a gearbox with straight gears, as the are noisier than the modern gearboxes with bevell gears. Does it have straight gears? Or may there be a cause to this whine? I changed all the diff oils, except the gearbox ane transfer case as the transfer case had sufficient oil and gearbox was to hard to reach the plug and I don't know how I'll fill it back up in that stupidly small space.
Anyone that can help me please? Shed some light on the situation for me?
Thanks again,
Stefan

Temeraire (2018 quasar grey automatic)
One of the last 200ish of the gen3s, probably.

Is there any particular gear that is noisy more than the others? As to replacing the gearbox oil with a little perseverance it's possible if messy to refill with the spout on one of the 1 litre bottles but it's definitely a faff.

To my knowledge, the only straight cut gears you will find are for reverse.

I'm not entirely sure when the last production car with straight cut gears was sold, but I'd wager it was about 60 years before 2012. Chances are your gearbox is failing as many around that age do. There is information about R72 gearbox failure in the Wiki.

Yokohama Geolanders, Sony head unit, NAUTILUS Air Horn, DRL conversion, Rear cargo space, Elvis Bobblehead, transfer Guard, Indian hanging Elephant, Koni Heavy track dampers, Custom SS exhaust, Voodoo Doll, Adventure Rack with LED ight bar, vintage ERIBA caravan usually attached (yes it's slow)

I suspect nothing is wrong with it, they do have a more noticeable gear noise than a "normal car". Plenty of gears in motion below so is to be expected.
A work colleague got in mine and commented it sounded like straight cut gears, he's into performance "sleepers", so he should know!
It's actually very quiet, but I do understand his comments in the lower gears.
I quite like it - makes travel slow sound fast

Some early Ferrari g/boxes used grease as the lubricant. Maybe they had straight cut gears!

Mostly noticable in 2nd and 3rd gear. Sounds noisier than reverse. I'll need a DIY oil pump, the spout won't even go in there.

That is also what I know, but wasn't sure about the other gears, it's almost noisier than reverse.

Well it almost sounds louder than reverse. I can enjoy it too at times. But I never heard a car like this so I became a bit concerned.

Service the drivetrain..... change oils in the gearbox, transfer box and diffs. If still noisy investigate further.....

They would be noisy in all gears, not just 2nd and 3rd.
