That is an interesting find indeed. As you say, I can imagine water getting in there - I've been in the water on a few occasions which I'm sure has at least touched the bottom of this open vent.
I think I will do the same. I have a bit of breather pipe left so I'll add that to the list for sure - thanks for passing along the info X8GGY.

The issue is that, at times, it can have a vacuum in it. If that time happens to co-incide with being in water.........
