Engine oil leak !

Hey everyone,

First time posting on the site but I could really use some help .....

I got 2004 jimny which has a oil leak. From what I can tell it’s coming from between the sump and the bell housing. Am I right In saying that this means the rear crank seal has gone ? Is there any tips you have for finding the definite cause for the oil leak ?

Also if it is the rear crank seal, how much of a pain is it to do ? I’m pretty capable with Tools and whatnot but I’m concerned it might just be better to ask a garage to sort it

Welcome to the forum. I've not had cause to do that myself but it is essentially a bit more on top of a clutch job so if you're up for that then off you go. Personally I'd have it to the garage as I don't really consider a clutch a driveway job.

Iv not really got the means of being able to shift the transmission box around as it looks pretty heavy and like there’s not much space under there haha
I don’t suppose you’ve got any idea of the kind of cost they’d want for such a thing ? I guess around £500 - £600 if it’s abit more on top getting to the clutch

I'd guess that sounds about right, depends on how well you know the garage.

Just going to say hello and welcome as I can't add much more.

I tend to do my own clutch replacements as I have all the kit, but you are going to need a good trolley jack and 4 ramps to get the vehicle high. This assumes you can get at the shaft seal easily with the engine in place, otherwise it's an engine out clutch / seal replacement, requiring an engine hoist. Phone around for a few quotes, like insurance cost can vary considerably. If you have a trusted garage then just go with them, they are few and far between these days.

Before you do it, I would quickly check by looking behind the top of the engine. There are two leak points there, the rocker cover gasket and the Cam Sensor housing. See if there is oil around the back. It is worth a look to avoid taking the clutch apart and finding the seal is ok.
