Most silicon sealants have a very high melting point, above 300c.. its great stuff as a gasket... put it on evenly, wait for it to cure then tighten up and one instant rubber gasket ! The proper stuff, rtv instant gasket says put it on then leave for a few mins before clamping up.. Presume it sets faster and a few mins allows the solvents to evaporate?
The liquid gasket can be expensive... its for when there needs to be zero tolerance between mating surfaces like cylinder heads..

OK thanks peeps. Unfortunately i wasn't able even to get the sump / oil pan off. Even with raising the chassis to allow the axle to drop, i had next to no room to get any purchase with a pallet knife / screwdriver / chisel, (not necessarily in that order), to break the seal and get between the pan and the engine block. I had to put the bolts back and see about getting a new pan so i can wreck the existing one, but at £120 + vat for the sake of a few drips here and there, is it worth it? I would like to have another go as i don't like being defeated so if there's any surefire advise on how to get the two apart i'm open to suggestions.
