Haven't been on here for a while i must admit so hope i posted in the right place. I've been looking for a how to if there is one on oil sump gasket removal etc, To be honest, how difficult can it be and i am more than capable, at least usually, however i wondered, before i disable the car altogether and get half way through, does the bottom of the sump come straight out once the oil is emptied and bolts removed etc? It's just the that garage told me i need to drop something and he didn't say what. I normally let the garage do some things as i simply don't have the time but this is something i wasn't prepared to pay £174 for. Any help much appreciated.

There isnt a sump gasket as such, its a liquid sealant applied as the sump is installed (at least it is on an M13 series engine).

drain oil, undo the bolts and wrestle it out, new sealant and back together.

If the sump itself if leaking through rusty bits then its time for a new one.

Not done it myself but on a defender it is a lot easier to support the car on the chassis with tall stands and let the axle droop, giving you more space to get the sump out. Jimny may be different.

Many thanks Riccy and 11/60 i'll bare that in mind. It is a silicone tube i have Riccy so that's all ok. Last time i used that stuff on a previous car i think i did the bolts up too tight as all the splodge came out but how far do you go (torque etc). Perhaps best to allow it to cure slightly? Ever used it yourself?

Do up the bolts until it just squeezes out and,as you say, let it cure a bit before final tightening. Not done the sump myself but have used plenty of silicone on bikes lol

I started off high and worked my way down ever since :-)

I did it when i did the M16 engine swap, so the engine was out of the car and good access. No doubt there is a specified torque, but i just went as tight as i felt comfortable with. the sealant only squeezed out a little bit and its been ok so far.
