OBD2 fault code reader was created by Fieldsports
Hello.
I am lost off about what code reader to get.
I thought that Jimnys were OBD2 16pin sockets ( Well they are )
So anyways I aint got a lot of cash to spend so I bought a Code reader, This one here from Ebay. ( This is the actual one I got )
Anyways, I plug it in and after a while of doing its checks it says "Link Failed" I tried loads and followed the instructions.
So I tried it in my mates 03 Vectra it said the same. Link Failed.
I tried it in my other mates Renault Espace and it read and worked.
NOW I am lost off....this is OBD2 and my Jimny is over 1996 and it don't seem to work.
What cheap reader will work on the Jimny ?
I have not got faults at this time but would like a code reader to hand just incase I do need to erase a code.
Any advice will be great.

Rhinoman is the expert in this area and has posted here before. Perhaps I should get him to write a 1 page summary on the subject for the main website pages.
Here are some of his pearls of wisdom...
www.bigjimny.com/index.php?option=com_ku...=2924&Itemid=75#3119
...and the bad news is about halfway down the page showing that early Jimnys run the OBD1 protocol.

There is a few on Ebay but most says that they work on Petrol cars 2001 and above.

The scan tool asvertised on eBay will not work on an OBD1 Suzuki, the early Jimnys use a Suzuki proprietary protocol, commonly referred to as SDL. Although they have an OBD2 (J1962) connector the diagnostic link is wired to pin 9 which the OBD2 specification reserves for the manufacturers own use. There are two scan tools that will work, the Tech 1 and the Carmen, unfortunately they cost several thousand pounds each. I have been developing software for Suzukis, this software uses a text format configuration file to allow it to be adapted for use with any SDL Suzuki, although it sometimes requires a little work to define the correct address for an ECU. I havealready done quite a lot of work with the 81A11 ECU fitted to some early Jimnys and many of the addresses are known.
I have recently produced hardware that is specifically designed to work with the Suzuki interface.

If your ECU is a 33920-81A11 then I can offer a PC interface that will work. I have 85% of the addresses (PIDs), I have been working on this with a guy in Portugal and by working through the software. If you are reasonably close to me then I will bring a tool to you and check it on your Jimny.
Cheers
